Summer Safety Series

Summer is right around the corner! Your providers at Smyrna Pediatrics have a few tips to keep your summer safe and fun, all in one.


Sunscreen/Sunburn

-Minimum SPF 50 recommended by dermatologists

-Start application of sunscreen as early as 6 months of age

-Reapply every 30-60 minutes when outdoors

-Take a cool bath for sunburn and apply an aloe cream or gel to dry skin

-Keep your child hydrated when sunburn is present

-Cover sunburnt areas with sun-proof clothing or hats if outside


Supervision

Adults must be present with children near open bodies of water, regardless of depth


Stay Hydrated

-Drink plenty of water in the summer with warmer temperatures

-If your child has dry mouth, not producing tears when crying, or is not urinating every 8 hours, your child may be dehydrated


Stings and bites

-Avoid bug bites by wearing bug spray when outdoors with 20-30% DEET

-Treat itching with Benadryl or over-the-counter itch relief

-If you suspect a tick bite has occurred, please contact your pediatric provider

-If itching or swelling worsens, follow-up with your pediatric provider

-If lip, tongue swelling, difficulty breathing occurs, or there is severe eye involvement from the rash, please take your child to the nearest emergency department


Sumac, ivy, and oak: the poison plants

-Avoid heavy brush areas

-Wear long pants/sleeves if in heavy brush areas

-Rinse off entire body with warm water after playing outside

-If rashes present, treat with Benadryl or over-the-counter itch relief

-Call your doctor if the rash spreads to private areas or face

-If lip, tongue swelling, difficulty breathing occurs, or there is severe eye involvement from the rash, please take your child to the nearest emergency department


Sports

-Wear a helmet when riding bicycle, scooters, four wheelers, dirt bikes, rollerblading, etc.

-Wear bright-colored or reflective clothing if playing outside in the dark

-Do not play in the street near heavily traffic areas

-Supervise your child during on any outdoor play equipment including but not limited to playgrounds and pools

-If your child has a head injury, please contact your pediatric provider. Take your child to the nearest emergency department if they have lost consciousness, are vomiting, are complaining of severe headaches or have any open wounds/injuries
